How It Works

Decimal Separators

Countries use different characters to separate the integer part from the fractional part of a number:

  • Period (.) — Used in the US, UK, China, Japan, Australia, and much of Asia. Example: 1,234.56.
  • Comma (,) — Used in most of continental Europe, South America, and parts of Africa. Example: 1.234,56.
  • Momayyez (٫) — Used in Arabic-speaking countries. Example: ١٢٣٤٫٥٦.
Thousand Grouping

Large numbers are grouped for readability, but the separator and group size vary:

  • Comma (,) — Common in English-speaking countries. Example: 1,234,567.
  • Period (.) — Used in Germany, Spain, and much of Europe. Example: 1.234.567.
  • Space or thin space — Used in France, Sweden, and ISO standard. Example: 1 234 567.
  • Indian grouping — Groups of 2 after the first 3. Example: 12,34,567.
